Roullete is a casino game in which a small ball rolls around a spinning wheel and players bet on which number it will land. The odds on a winning bet are determined by a variety of factors, including whether the number is red or black, odd or even, and high or low. Players wager against the house and the bets are made until the ball stops and a compartment is occupied. The game originated in Europe and is one of the more popular casino games.

On European-style wheels, a 37th compartment carries the sign 0; on American roulette wheels, two green compartments containing the signs 0 and 00 appear on opposite sides of the wheel.
Once the game begins, the dealer will spin the wheel and then lower it to allow the ball to enter a compartment. The dealer then marks the winning number on the betting mat and pays the winners before clearing the losing bets off the table. The winning numbers are then re-marked and the process repeats.
There is no known strategy that can beat the odds of roulette in the long run. While some gamblers try to predict the outcome of a spin by studying the movements of other players or hoping that their birthday, anniversary or lottery numbers will come up, this has no bearing on the chances of hitting a winning bet.
The best way to play roulette is to choose a table within your budget. Each table carries a placard that describes the minimum and maximum bets allowed. It is also a good idea to start by making outside bets, which are generally cheaper and offer higher payouts. Some players like to watch the other gamblers and try to guess what they are doing, but this is just entertainment and does not improve your odds of winning. It is also a good idea to cash out your winnings as quickly as possible to avoid dipping into your budget for future bets. This will keep you from gambling more than you can afford to lose.
